The Knulp Jazz Club will welcome a major figure in American jazz this month when saxophonist Tom Scott makes his Trieste debut. The three-time Grammy Award winner is scheduled to perform on September 15 at 8 p.m., appearing with the Tom Scott Trieste Quartet.
Over the course of a career spanning five decades, Scott has become one of the most recorded saxophonists in popular music, with more than 2,000 credits to his name. His work has appeared alongside artists as varied as Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Joni Mitchell, Quincy Jones, Rod Stewart, Barbra Streisand, Thelonious Monk, Aretha Franklin and Aerosmith. He was the musical director for stars including Mitchell, Harrison and Olivia Newton-John, and his playing can be heard on hit records such as Carole King’s “Jazzman,” McCartney’s “Listen to What the Man Said,” Rod Stewart’s “Do You Think I’m Sexy,” Blondie’s “Rapture” and Toto’s “Rosanna.”
Scott’s contributions extend well beyond the concert stage. He has composed and performed music for some of Hollywood’s most celebrated films, including “Taxi Driver,” “Blade Runner,” “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?,” “Toy Story 2,” “Monsters, Inc.” and the most recent remake of “A Star Is Born.” He is also closely associated with television, having written themes for series including the 1970s hit “Starsky & Hutch.”
For his appearance in Trieste, Scott will be joined by drummer and composer Fabio Jegher, bassist Mario Cogno and guitarist Marko Čepak. The program will feature selections from Scott’s extensive repertoire of soul and jazz, as well as new compositions by Jegher. Among them are works from Jegher’s latest orchestral album, Moodlights, recorded in California and co-arranged with Scott, who appears on saxophone and Roland Aerophone.
The concert represents the second collaboration between Scott and Jegher, who first worked together on the 1994 album Life Tones and Film Colors. In addition to original pieces, the evening’s program will also include well-known standards designed to appeal to a wide audience.
Tickets are priced at 15 euros, with a book-signing session to follow the performance.
The event takes place at Knulp Jazz Club, Via Madonna del Mare 7/a. Reservations can be made via email at knulp@knulp.it.
