Trieste’s Biblioteca Civica Attilio Hortis and Museo LETS – Letteratura Trieste are set to resume their reading group activities this September, offering residents a range of literary programs and discussions.

At the Biblioteca Civica Hortis on Via Madonna del Mare 13, the “Voltare pagina” group will reconvene on Tuesdays beginning September 23 to explore the series Gli indimenticabili. Meanwhile, the PEN Lettori group will resume its Monday sessions, Le scienze raccontano, starting September 29.

At Museo LETS, located at Piazza Hortis 4, the Ulysses Reading Group of Trieste will begin its fall sessions on Friday, September 5, with Laura Pelaschiar, associate professor of English literature at the University of Trieste.

The autumn-winter 2025 season will officially open on Monday, September 1, at 5:30 p.m., with the reading group In prima persona, hosted by the Comune di Trieste in the Museo LETS Forum Space. The session will feature reflections on the interplay between history and storytelling inspired by Nigerian author Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie.

Upcoming Reading Schedule:

  • Monday, September 1: Il sussurro del mondo by Richard Powers
Powers, a Pulitzer Prize–winning author, blends literature and science in this novel, redefining history as the vast, ancient narrative of trees and forests, while the personal stories of nine characters are shaped by their encounters with the natural world.
  • Monday, September 8: Il petalo cremisi e il bianco by Michel Faber
Set in Victorian London in 1870, Faber’s novel explores class divisions, gender inequality, and societal hypocrisy through the life of Sugar, an educated and ambitious prostitute, whose path crosses with a wealthy heir, revealing the cracks in the Victorian social structure.
  • Monday, September 22: La storia segreta della rivoluzione by Hilary Mantel
Mantel reexamines the French Revolution through the lives of Danton, Robespierre, and Desmoulins, tracing their journeys from youth to the guillotine, illustrating how historical events emerge from personal ambitions, friendships, loves, and betrayals rather than a singular monumental narrative.

All titles are available in multiple copies at the municipal libraries of Trieste and can also be borrowed digitally through the MLOL service. They are widely available for purchase at local bookstores.
