Early Tuesday morning, offensive and xenophobic messages appeared outside the Consulate General of the Republic of Slovenia, located on Via del Teatro Romano in Trieste.

Unknown individuals affixed a yellow sign above the consulate’s plaque overnight, securing it with red adhesive tape. The incident is currently under investigation by the Digos, the Italian special police unit responsible for political and social crimes. Authorities are reviewing surveillance footage from the area in hopes of identifying those responsible.
The president of Slovenia, Nataša Pirc Musar, strongly condemned the act, calling it “an unacceptable attack on the Slovenian community in Italy and on Slovenia itself.” She urged Italian authorities to conduct a thorough and serious investigation.
Slovenia’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also issued a statement, describing the provocation as “reflecting the language of the darkest chapters of twentieth-century history, unacceptable in today’s society.”
