Interview: Caterina de Gavardo, Trieste’s Councillor for Urban Security Policies; Walter Milocchi, Commander of the Trieste Local Police
The municipal government of Trieste released the first results of its new neighborhood safety initiative, Progetto Rioni Sicuri (Safe Districts Project), during a press conference held this morning at City Hall. The presentation was led by the City Councilor for Public Safety, Caterina de Gavardo, alongside Local Police Commander Walter Milocchi, Salvatore Porro, Chair of the Sixth Commission, and Emiliano Lopreato, a councilor from the Fifth District.
Launched two months ago, the project is designed to strengthen the presence of local authorities within neighborhoods and to improve residents’ sense of safety through targeted community engagement and policing strategies.
“The Progetto Rioni Sicuri was developed by listening closely to the needs of local communities and incorporating suggestions from active city council members,” Councillor de Gavardo explained. “Our goal is to bring institutions closer to the people and enhance the perception of safety among residents.”
While specific statistics were not disclosed during the presentation, officials noted that early feedback from both local authorities and community members has been positive, particularly in areas where increased police presence and direct communication initiatives have been implemented.
The city plans to continue monitoring the project’s impact and will consider expanding the program based on results from its pilot phase.
