In a cultural climate increasingly shaped by tensions between the center and the periphery, a new video installation titled Dialoghi al margine will open Friday, June 27, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Cavò, an experimental art space in the historic Cavana district of Trieste. The event is part of the 11th edition of Varcare la frontiera, a long-running series curated by Cizerouno and supported by the Regional Government of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

The installation, conceived by artist Vincenzo Luongo, brings into dialogue the perspectives of economist Francesco Magris and sociolinguist Vera Gheno. Their contributions, presented in video format, are loosely based on themes proposed by curators Martina Vocci and Massimiliano Schiozzi. The point of departure is Magris’ 2015 essay collection Al margine, published by Bompiani, in which he writes: “Never before have the center and the margins opposed, mingled, and sometimes exchanged places in the struggle for the conquest, expansion, and defense of individual liberties.”

Gheno’s reflections, recorded specifically for the installation, engage with Magris’ ideas from the lens of language and identity. The result is a layered, dialogic experience where images, text, and sound interweave across the walls of Cavò, inviting visitors to reflect on the evolving relationships between democracy, communication, and social tolerance.

With the theme of “margins” as its conceptual backbone, Varcare la frontiera continues its exploration of boundaries—be they cultural, linguistic, or political—positioning art and scholarship as tools for engagement and redefinition.
