In response to soaring demand from families, the municipality of Muggia is significantly expanding its summer childcare services this year, adding more places, new locations, and enhanced transportation options to better support working parents during the school break.
The initiative, announced by municipal councilor Gianna Birnberg, includes an increased budget to accommodate the growing number of requests. “Initially, we had capped enrollment at 60 children per session for each service,” said Birnberg. “But faced with overwhelming interest, we made the decision to increase our financial commitment so we could welcome as many children as possible.”
The town’s summer programming encompasses early childhood and primary school day camps, as well as a recreational service offering shorter hours. The early childhood and primary centers will each run for four weeks, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., with space for up to 300 children total. The recreational program, geared toward slightly older children, will run for six weeks, from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and has expanded from 60 to 75 places per session—bringing the total capacity to 450 spots.
To accommodate the growth, the town opened an additional facility for the early childhood camp at the Biancospino school, while the primary school program will be held at the Loreti elementary school.
Transportation is also getting a boost: the town has expanded its school bus services to ensure accessibility to the new locations and support participation in activities.
“These services are always in high demand,” said Birnberg. “They offer crucial support to families during the summer months when schools are closed and parents are juggling work and vacation schedules.”
The planning process was anything but simple. From the moment registration closed on April 14, Birnberg and her team worked against the clock to finalize logistics ahead of the school year’s end. “It required not just rethinking the organization, but also securing additional funding in a short time frame,” she noted.
With the school year about to conclude, Muggia’s expanded summer services are poised to make a tangible difference for hundreds of local families—offering a solution where play, care, and community come together.
