In a heartwarming display of environmental stewardship, young eco-explorers took to the shores of Trieste, Italy, to champion the cause of marine conservation. Under the banner “Little Eco-Explorers for a Clean Sea,” the event, held on Friday, May 10, 2024, near the Barcola Pinewood, marked a significant stride in fostering eco-consciousness among the city’s youth.
Spearheaded by Mare Nordest SSD a.r.l. in collaboration with the Trieste Municipality, this initiative aimed to instill a sense of responsibility toward safeguarding the marine ecosystem. Guided by seasoned divers from Deep Blue Dive and supported by dedicated onshore staff, the children from the municipal kindergarten “La Scuola del Sole” enthusiastically engaged in underwater clean-up efforts.
Prior to their hands-on involvement, the young participants immersed themselves in a multilingual educational session titled “Marino and the Clean Sea.” Through storytelling in Italian, English, Slovenian, and German, the children learned about the pivotal role of oceans, marine life, and the importance of adopting sustainable practices.
The event, a precursor to the upcoming Mare Nordest festivities scheduled from June 14th to 16th, garnered support from key regional and municipal figures. Fabio Scoccimarro, the Assessor for Environment and Energy of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Autonomous Region, and Maurizio De Blasio, the municipal Assessor for Education and Family Policies, were among those present to commend the young eco-warriors for their commitment.
European solidarity echoed through the participation of the European Information Center EUROPE DIRECT Trieste, underscoring the alignment with the European Commission’s #EUBeachCleanup and the #GreenDeal initiatives.
In a symbolic gesture of environmental vigilance, LOGICA Srl. generously provided logistical support for waste collection and disposal. A tally of the day’s efforts revealed a substantial haul, including 48 pieces of plastic, 12 pieces of glass, 11 pieces of metal, and 22 assorted items, underscoring the magnitude of marine debris accumulation.
As the day drew to a close, anticipation mounted for the forthcoming Mare Nordest event, promising further opportunities for community engagement and environmental advocacy. Gratitude flowed freely towards all stakeholders, including governmental bodies, community organizations, and sponsors, with special recognition reserved for the young participants who embodied the spirit of environmental activism.
Amidst the waves of enthusiasm and hope, Trieste’s young eco-explorers emerged as shining beacons of change, underscoring the power of collective action in safeguarding our precious marine ecosystems.
