In a groundbreaking development set to transform travel in the Central European region, a direct train service connecting Trieste/Villa Opicina and Fiume is slated to kick off next summer, thanks to the Interreg Central Europe SUSTANCE project. The news comes on the heels of Monday’s international trial run of the new Frecciarossa, poised to operate between Mestre and Ljubljana, as reported by La Voce del Popolo.

As per the 2024 timetable released by Croatian Railways, the Fiume-Trieste line via Villa Opicina is making waves. Departing from Villa Opicina at 7:50 AM, the train is scheduled to reach Fiume by 9:54 AM. The return journey will see it leave Fiume at 6:25 PM, arriving back at Villa Opicina by 8:35 PM. This service is set to run until September 30, 2024.

Furthermore, the much-anticipated direct train from Trieste to Ljubljana is on the verge of becoming a reality. First announced in 2021 with a test run of an ETR.1000 from Venice Mestre to Villa Opicina, the service is expected to launch soon. Additionally, plans are in motion to extend this cross-border service to Venice and Milan, reviving a transnational route between the two countries that was operational back in 2008. Exciting times lie ahead for rail travel enthusiasts in the region!
