An Unusual Amount of Huge Jellyfish Spotted in Trieste

The photographs taken early on 19 April of hundreds of jellyfish floating by Molo Audace went viral as Triestini were trying to comprehend the unusual phenomenon.

This morning, 20 April, hundreds of jellyfish were still floating along the Trieste coastline.

The huge jellyfish in question are the sea lung (Rhizostoma pulmo), which inflict a very mild sting if touched. 

Wildlife biologist Nicola Bresso explained that “the winds and currents brought the jellyfish together in those points because in springtime the sea water is the warmest on the surface. There’s more light and therefore more plankton.”

Many Triestini snapped pictures of the strange but beautiful sight.
