Interviews: Caterina de Gavardo, Trieste City Councillor for Public Security; Paolo Jerman, Deputy Commander of the Trieste Local Police
Trieste has added 26 police officers to its local police force since December 2025, while three existing officers have been promoted to deputy commissioners, the city administration announced Monday.
The latest recruits were presented at the San Sebastiano barracks by Caterina de Gavardo, the city official responsible for public security, alongside Paolo Jerman, the deputy police commander.
Five new officers joined the force on Oct. 1, bringing the number of recruits hired through a 2025 competition to 26. The group consists of 22 men and four women, with an average age of 30.
The three newly promoted deputy commissioners joined the force in 2019 and advanced through an internal selection process. They will initially work across three of the city’s four districts, assisting local supervisors and gaining experience in personnel management and operational coordination.
The local police force currently has 294 employees, including 247 operational personnel and 47 administrative staff. The operational workforce comprises 58 women and 189 men.
The new officers will undergo a six-month probationary period and mandatory training at the Regional Local Police School in Paluzza, in the province of Udine. After completing their training and weapons certification, they will gradually take on full duties, including evening and night shifts.
De Gavardo said the new hires would strengthen the force’s ability to monitor the city and serve residents. Jerman said the recruitment would also lower the force’s average age and bring additional skills to its operations.
