A small town in Friuli Venezia Giulia region has become the first local authority in the region to test an artificial intelligence platform designed to analyze traffic patterns in real time, offering officials a new tool for urban mobility planning.
The four-month pilot, known as FVGVision Pro, was presented Sunday in Manzano by regional and municipal officials alongside Insiel, the regional technology company that developed the system as part of the Smart City AI project.
Between May 15 and Sept. 10, the platform processed 2,856 hours of video and analyzed 257 million image frames, recording the movements of 411,643 vehicles through the town’s streets. The system uses high-resolution cameras and edge AI technology to convert video footage into statistical traffic data rather than storing identifiable imagery, according to project organizers.
Cars accounted for 90.6 percent of recorded traffic, with 372,907 vehicles detected during the trial. Trucks represented 6.1 percent, followed by buses at 2.3 percent and motorcycles at 1 percent. Features to monitor pedestrians and cyclists are expected to be activated in a later phase.
The data also revealed distinct traffic patterns. Vehicle volumes were highest between 10 a.m. and noon, while Fridayssaw the greatest overall traffic. The busiest single period recorded during the study occurred on Saturday morning.
Regional officials said the platform is intended to help local governments and police departments make evidence-based decisions on road safety, traffic management and infrastructure planning while complying with privacy regulations.
Manzano’s trial may serve as a model for broader adoption of AI-assisted mobility analysis across municipalities in Friuli Venezia Giulia.
