Venice’s controversial entry fee for day-trippers generated more than €5 million during its 2026 season, city officials announced Sunday, as preliminary data suggested the measure may be helping to ease overcrowding on the busiest days.
According to the Venice city council, more than 650,000 paid entry vouchers were issued during the 60 days the fee was in effect between April 3 and July 26. The charge applied on weekends and selected weekdays, targeting periods of peak tourist demand.
Officials said an initial review of the data indicated that crowding in the historic center appeared to have declined on the busiest days compared with previous years. They emphasized, however, that the findings remain preliminary and will be examined in greater detail in a final report expected early next week.
Venice introduced the day-tripper access fee in 2024 as the first initiative of its kind aimed at managing overtourism in a major historic city. Under the system, visitors not staying overnight are required to reserve their visit and pay an access fee on designated high-traffic days.
The program has attracted international attention as a possible model for other tourism-dependent destinations struggling with overcrowding. It has also faced criticism from some residents and business owners, who argue that the measure has done little to address the broader challenges posed by mass tourism.
The final report is expected to help determine whether the system will be maintained, modified or expanded for the 2027 tourist season.
Last month, Venice’s newly elected mayor, Simone Venturini, proposed increasing the day-tripper fee to as much as €50 on the busiest days as part of a broader strategy to reduce pressure on the lagoon city’s historic center.
