Interviews: Massimiliano Fedriga, governor of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region; Donata Vianelli, Rector of the University of Trieste
The University of Trieste celebrated its annual Graduation Day for doctoral graduates on Wednesday, bringing together newly awarded Ph.D. recipients from 14 countries in Piazza Verdi, in a ceremony highlighting the city’s growing role as an international academic center.
Among those attending were the president of the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, Massimiliano Fedriga, and the university’s rector, Donata Vianelli.
Addressing the graduates, Fedriga said the increasing presence of university events in the city center reflected the deeper integration of higher education institutions into Trieste’s urban and economic life. He argued that investing in human capital is becoming increasingly important as technological change reshapes labor markets and regional economies.
Fedriga said students who choose to pursue advanced studies at the University of Trieste, the University of Udine, and the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) contribute to strengthening the region’s appeal beyond Italy’s borders.
He added that the regional government’s objective is not only to attract talented students from abroad and other parts of Italy but also to create conditions that encourage them to remain in Friuli Venezia Giulia after completing their studies.
According to Fedriga, the availability of highly qualified researchers and professionals is a key factor for companies considering investments in the region. He said access to a strong higher education system and a skilled workforce has become an important element in attracting major industrial groups and supporting the region’s long-term competitiveness.
