Trieste has been selected to host the EuroVelo & Cycling Tourism International Conference in September 2027, bringing one of Europe’s leading gatherings on cycling infrastructure, sustainable mobility and cycle tourism to FVG capital.

The announcement was made by the European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) during Velo-city 2026, an international conference on urban cycling and sustainable transportation currently taking place in Rimini.

Regional officials described the selection as recognition of Friuli Venezia Giulia’s long-term investment in cycling infrastructure and sustainable transportation networks. Over the past several years, the region has expanded its network of cycle routes and promoted connections between cycling, public transportation and tourism.

The EuroVelo & Cycling Tourism International Conference is considered one of Europe’s most important events dedicated to bicycle networks, active mobility and slow tourism. The conference is expected to attract representatives from European institutions, local and regional governments, tourism organizations, universities, transportation experts and industry stakeholders from across the continent.

According to regional authorities, the bid followed a multi-stage institutional process. On June 5, the regional government approved an agreement outlining the framework for organizing the event. Four days later, on June 9, Friuli Venezia Giulia and the European Cyclists’ Federation signed the official agreement confirming Trieste as the host city.

The event will be coordinated by the regional government, with support from the Department of Infrastructure and Territory and the regional tourism agency, PromoTurismoFVG, which will assist with international promotion and visitor services.

The selection highlights the growing role of cycling tourism in regional development strategies across Europe. Friuli Venezia Giulia is crossed by several major international cycling routes, including sections of the EuroVelo network, which links destinations across the continent.

Trieste’s location at the crossroads of Central Europe, the Adriatic region and the Balkans was also considered an advantage, positioning the city as a meeting point for different transportation systems and cultural regions.

Preparations for the 2027 conference are expected to begin in the coming months. Regional representatives will formally introduce the Trieste edition at the 2026 EuroVelo & Cycling Tourism Conference, scheduled to take place in Utrecht, the Netherlands, later this year.

For Trieste and the wider Friuli Venezia Giulia region, the conference is expected to provide an international platform to showcase local cycling infrastructure, tourism offerings and sustainable mobility initiatives to a European audience.
