City officials in Trieste have issued an ozone alert after environmental forecasts indicated that current weather conditions are contributing to elevated concentrations of ground-level ozone in the atmosphere.

According to projections released by the Regional Environmental Protection Agency of Friuli Venezia Giulia (ARPA-FVG), ozone levels are expected to exceed the target threshold of 120 micrograms per cubic meter through at least June 19.

In response, the municipality has urged residents to take precautions to reduce exposure to the pollutant, particularly individuals considered more vulnerable to its effects, including children, older adults and those with pre-existing respiratory conditions.

The advisory follows provisions outlined in the city’s Air Quality Action Plan, adopted in 2013, which calls for public health measures when ozone concentrations are forecast to surpass recommended levels.

Officials encouraged residents to follow guidance issued by the local health authority, Azienda Sanitaria Universitaria Giuliano Isontina, regarding appropriate behaviors and preventive measures during periods of elevated ozone pollution.

Ground-level ozone, a key component of smog, is formed when pollutants react in the presence of sunlight and can pose health risks, especially during periods of hot and stable weather.
