Regional authorities in Friuli Venezia Giulia will expand evening ferry connections between Trieste and Muggia during the summer of 2026, adding new departures aimed at serving both residents and visitors along the Gulf of Trieste.

The enhanced schedule will run from June 15 through September 13 and will supplement the year-round public maritime transport service linking the two coastal communities. Officials said the additional routes are intended to address increased demand during the peak tourist season while offering an alternative to car travel.

Under the plan, two pairs of evening crossings will operate on weekdays and Saturdays, while Sundays and public holidays will feature a third pair of evening services. In total, 15 additional round trips will be offered each week, amounting to 30 extra sailings, evenly divided between departures from Trieste and Muggia.

Evening departures from Trieste will be scheduled at 9 p.m. and 10:15 p.m. daily, with an additional 7:45 p.m. departure on Sundays and public holidays. Return services from Muggia will leave at 9:35 p.m. and 10:50 p.m., with an additional 8:20 p.m. sailing on Sundays and holidays.

The regional government has allocated approximately €421,900 to fund the expanded service.

Cristina Amirante, the regional councillor for infrastructure and territory, said the initiative responds to requests from local communities, particularly the municipality of Muggia, where the ferry connection has become an increasingly popular transportation option.

Regional officials described maritime transport as an important component of Friuli Venezia Giulia’s broader mobility strategy, which seeks to integrate public transportation, tourism and environmental sustainability. The Trieste-Muggia route has become a regular part of the regional transit network and is widely used during the summer months, when visitors and residents travel between the historic port city and the Istrian-style seaside town.

The service will be operated by Tpl Fvg Scarl through subcontractor Delfino Verde Navigazione Srl, which already manages the existing year-round Trieste-Muggia ferry route.
