Norwegian Cruise Line will return to Trieste in the 2026 cruise season, with 11 scheduled port calls by the Norwegian Gem, bringing an estimated 25,000 passengers in transit, according to local port authorities and terminal operators.

The announcement follows recent discussions between the company and Trieste Terminal Passeggeri, which manages cruise operations at the city’s maritime gateway. The return marks a renewed presence for the U.S.-based cruise operator in the northern Adriatic port, which has been working to strengthen its position on major Mediterranean itineraries.

Officials said the reintroduction of Norwegian Cruise Line operations reflects broader efforts to maintain and expand Trieste’s connectivity within international cruise networks.

“Norwegian Cruise Line’s return represents an important result for Trieste and confirms the work being carried out to consolidate the port’s position in major international cruise circuits,” said Marco Consalvo, president of the Port System Authority of the Eastern Adriatic Sea and newly appointed head of Trieste Terminal Passeggeri. He emphasized that maintaining strong relationships with cruise operators and ensuring operational standards remain central to the port’s competitiveness.

While most cruise passengers do not stay overnight in the city, they typically spend several hours ashore, contributing to local economic activity across transportation, guided excursions, hospitality, retail, and artisan sectors. Port officials also highlighted the broader supply chain impact, including maritime services, provisioning, logistics, and technical support tied to ship operations.

Each call, they noted, generates a wider economic footprint extending beyond the terminal area into the regional tourism and service economy.

Separately, the cruise schedule in Trieste will see a notable arrival on May 17, when Mein Schiff 4, operated by TUI Cruises, is expected to dock at the city’s maritime station. The vessel’s arrival follows a period marked by a challenging voyage that drew attention within the international shipping sector.

Local authorities and Trieste Terminal Passeggeri are preparing a formal welcome for the ship and its crew upon arrival at the Stazione Marittima.

Trieste, which has increasingly positioned itself as a transit hub for cruise tourism in the northern Adriatic, continues to invest in port infrastructure and partnerships aimed at sustaining long-term traffic growth in the sector.
