In May 1976, a powerful earthquake struck the Friuli region in northeastern Italy, its tremor lasting nearly a minute and arriving just after 9 p.m. The shock left a profound mark on the landscape and its people. Nearly 1,000 lives were lost. Entire towns were reduced to rubble. Some 18,000 homes were destroyed, while another 75,000 suffered damage, leaving more than 100,000 residents without shelter.

The disaster remains one of the most devastating in modern Italian history, not only for its scale but for the enduring impact it had on communities across Friuli. In the years that followed, the region became a model for reconstruction, often cited for its emphasis on local involvement and resilience.

Italy marked the anniversary of the tragedy with a solemn session of the Regional Council of Friuli Venezia Giulia, held in the town of Gemona, one of the areas hardest hit by the quake. The commemoration was attended by the President of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, underscoring the national significance of the event and the lasting memory of those who perished.

The ceremony served not only as a moment of remembrance, but also as a reflection on the country’s capacity to rebuild in the face of profound loss.
