Nearly 300 students from across Italy gathered in the historic town of Venzone on Tuesday to mark the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Friuli earthquake, an event that reshaped the region and became a national reference point for disaster recovery and reconstruction.
The commemoration, organized by Italy’s Ministry of Education and Merit, is part of a national initiative combining educational workshops with reflections on the so-called “Friuli model,” widely cited for its rapid rebuilding and strong civic coordination.
Education Minister Giuseppe Valditara described the reconstruction as a key lesson for Italy, highlighting ongoing investments in school safety in the region, which total €371 million, including €127 million for seismic upgrades to school buildings.
Friuli Venezia Giulia governor Massimiliano Fedriga told students that the earthquake remains a defining part of the region’s identity. He said the recovery was not only physical but also social, shaped by the role of schools and younger generations in rebuilding community life.
Regional education councillor Alessia Rosolen highlighted the speed at which schools resumed operations after the disaster, describing education as a central pillar of the region’s long-term recovery and development.
The anniversary events aim to connect younger generations with a disaster that, officials said, continues to offer lessons in resilience, public investment and collective responsibility.
