A cold air mass moving across northern Europe is now influencing weather conditions in northeastern Italy, bringing colder and drier air into the upper Adriatic. The immediate threat of freezing rain has eased, but forecasters say Trieste is now entering a period dominated by the bora, the region’s strong and often disruptive northeasterly wind.
Today, Saturday, skies over Trieste are expected to be mostly clear to partly cloudy, with generally dry conditions. The calmer weather will be short-lived. By Sunday, the bora is forecast to strengthen significantly, driving much colder air into the city and sharply lowering the perceived temperature.
By Monday, a marked drop in temperatures is expected, with minimum values near minus 3 degrees Celsius along the coast. Combined with strong winds, the cold will feel more severe, especially in exposed areas.
The risk of gelicidio—the thin layer of ice that forms when rain freezes on contact with cold ground, often called “black ice”—has subsided for now, reducing the immediate danger on roads and sidewalks. However, officials caution that rapidly falling temperatures could still create localized icy patches.
