A Trieste-based engineering company is preparing to challenge a global record this week with the unveiling of what could become the world’s largest wedge gate valve.

On Dec. 11, Orion Valves will present a 114-inch, 120-ton steel valve designed for a petrochemical complex in Saudi Arabia. If certified, it would surpass the current record of 108 inches. A Guinness World Records adjudicator will attend the event to verify the measurements and confirm whether the company’s claim qualifies for official recognition.

More than 500 guests are expected at the ceremony, including regional and municipal leaders—Friuli Venezia Giulia President Massimiliano Fedriga and Trieste Mayor Roberto Dipiazza—as well as representatives from Saudi Aramco and Hyundai, the valve’s commissioning companies.

The record attempt coincides with a milestone year for Orion Valves, which is marking its 75th anniversary. The company emphasized the regional roots of the project: the valve is manufactured almost entirely in Friuli Venezia Giulia, with most partner firms based in the region.

An Engineering Feat

The valve—classified as a 114”–150 Class Rating Cast Steel Wedge Gate Valve API 600—stands 13.95 meters tall (45.7 feet) and weighs roughly 120 tons. It was engineered for Amiral, a major petrochemical project under development in Jubail, Saudi Arabia, through a joint venture between Saudi Aramco and TotalEnergies. Once shipped, the valve will be integrated into the flare line collector system, a key safety mechanism in oil production facilities.

More than twenty companies from Friuli Venezia Giulia, Veneto and Croatia contributed to the project, reinforcing the region’s position as a hub for advanced industrial engineering. Key partners include Saiph, Acciaierie di Cividale, Innoway, Petrolavori and the Galperti Group, an approved supplier for Saudi Aramco.

“This moment represents the culmination of extraordinary work carried out by hundreds of people,” said Luca Farina, president of Orion Valves. “If confirmed, this Guinness World Records recognition belongs to our employees, our partners and the territory that has supported us. As we celebrate 75 years of activity, this achievement reflects our commitment to innovation and excellence.”

After the certification event, the valve will undergo final preparations before being transported by sea to Saudi Arabia. A specialized vessel will handle the shipment, with installation at the Jubail site expected in 2026.
