Every Saturday we’re spotlighting remarkable local females who could change the way we look at the world. This Saturday is Federica Seganti’s turn who talks to us about her impressive career, from her studies in Political Science at the University of Trieste to an MBA Degree in International Business at the MIB Trieste School of Management. Her journey led her to London, where she gained invaluable experience in mergers and acquisitions, before returning to Italy to assume leadership roles in finance, education, and corporate governance.

As the Chairwoman and CEO of Friulia SpA, Seganti plays a key role in shaping finance in our Friulia Venezia Giulia Region. “At Friulia, we are committed to supporting companies in their growth and internationalization.

Our region holds a privileged position as a bridge between the Italian market and Central Europe. With the right strategy, our businesses can seize many opportunities.”, said Federica Seganti to InTrieste.

When asked about her experience in high-level finance and management, she acknowledges the challenges but emphasizes meritocracy as the key to progress. “Women bring essential strengths—strategic vision, adaptability, and collaboration—that drive success. The goal is clear: equal opportunities, fair recognition, and a corporate culture where women thrive based on their skills and contributions.”

While she may have encountered gender-related obstacles in her career, she never let them define her journey. “At the beginning, sometimes happened that I was judged more for my appearance than my skills. But I never gave much importance to it—I proved my value through my work.”

Federica’s perspective on women’s leadership transcends mere gender issues. “There are differences, but they should be seen as opportunities rather than obstacles. Women tend to be more organized and cautious, less prone to risk, but often more pragmatic. Leadership should be about personal characteristics and skills, not gender.”

Seganti draws inspiration from Maria Theresa of Austria, who transformed Trieste in the 18th century without ever setting foot in the city. “Her legacy proves that women, just like men, have the power to deeply transform the society they live in.”

Encouraging female participation in finance and leadership, she sees education as the foundation of change. “There is no magic formula—only a long-term process that starts at home and in schools. Institutions play a fundamental role in removing barriers that hinder individual development and participation in society.”

As Director of the Master in Insurance & Risk Management at MIB Trieste School of Management, Seganti is passionate about mentoring the next generation. “When I teach, I share my experiences to help students find their path. Gender should never be a barrier—both young men and women must challenge themselves and identify areas for growth.”

She recalls advising a student preparing for a job interview in London: “I told her to be more flexible and open- minded. At first, she was uncertain, but months later, she thanked me—she had passed the interview. The credit was hers, but it meant a lot to me that she wasn’t afraid to question herself.”

Her advice to young female leaders: “Happiness comes from following your passion, taking risks, and persevering. Be patient, never let intimidation stop you, and learn from constructive criticism. This is your life—go out and seize it!”
