Interview: Mitja Gialuz, president Barcolana
Ahead of the 57th edition of the Barcolana, one of the world’s largest sailing regattas, organizers have announced a new initiative to make life easier for Trieste residents and visitors. Beginning Thursday at 2 pm, a new parking area near Largo Santos, just outside the Porto Vecchio access road, will offer 391 free spaces for cars.
The lot, created in collaboration with Coop and Trieste Terminal Passeggeri, will also include eight spots reserved for people with disabilities and will be illuminated by sixteen street lamps. It will be open and guarded 24 hours a day throughout the event, from Thursday to Sunday.
“The color is blue, but the parking is free,” organizers said, noting that although the painted lines usually mark paid parking, access will be complimentary for the duration of Barcolana 57.
“This is a dream come true,” said Mitja Gialuz, president of the Barcolana, highlighting the importance of improving logistics and accessibility during the regatta, which draws thousands of visitors to the city each year.
The parking area will open at 2 pm on Thursday and close after the regatta ends on Sunday, October 13, at midnight, when Porto Vecchio traffic will gradually return to normal.
