Interview: Monica Cosmai, the organizer
This November, Gorizia will host a major cultural event linking local heritage with one of Italy’s most renowned institutions. Beginning November 4, the Count’s Hall of Gorizia Castle will open its doors to an exhibition of historic costumes from Milan’s famed Teatro alla Scala.
The monthlong exhibition, organized by Fabrizia Perko, Monica Cosmai, and Barbara Fausto, will feature about 20 costumes and 15 undergarments from La Scala’s collections. The initiative is part of the lead-up to Gorizia and Nova Gorica’s designation as European Capital of Culture in 2025.
For the organizers, both former teachers, the exhibition carries an educational mission. “Gorizia has an important fashion school,” Ms. Cosmai said. “We wanted to give students, many of whom may never have the chance to visit La Scala, the opportunity to see firsthand how garments and costumes are crafted. Each piece is the result of highly specialized work by artisans within the theater.”
The costumes are being loaned to the city at no cost, a gesture the organizers described as a significant show of support. “We are grateful to La Scala for this generous gift,” Ms. Perko said. “Our hope is to create an exhibition that appeals not only to visitors but also to Gorizia residents, showing how meaningful cultural events can be realized even with limited budgets.”
Local collaboration has played a central role. The Danzerini di Lucinico, a historic folkloric association, provided both financial and logistical assistance to help bring the project to fruition.
The exhibition is expected to draw interest from across the region, offering the public a rare glimpse into the craftsmanship of one of the world’s most storied theaters while highlighting Gorizia’s own cultural and educational identity.
