On September 21, the steepest and perhaps most emblematic climb in Trieste will once again turn into a stage for athletes, cyclists, and residents eager to test their stamina. The Rampigada Santa, part sporting event and part street festival, returns to the city’s Scala Santa with its notorious average gradient of 16.2 percent.

Participants may tackle the ascent by running, cycling, or both. Organizers emphasize that the event is less about breaking records and more about celebrating sustainable mobility, community spirit, and Trieste’s distinctive urban geography.

The Rampigada Santa has grown over the years into more than a competition. Music, entertainment, and a lively atmosphere accompany the race, making it a fixture in the city’s late-summer calendar.

The deadline for registration closes on Thursday, September 18. More information is available on the organizers’ website.

For many Triestini, the race also carries a symbolic message: the possibility of reaching the Karst plateau without relying on a car, by embracing the city’s natural challenges with energy and good humor.
