On September 16, the University of Trieste will host a full-day conference exploring the role of batteries in the global energy transition, bringing together researchers, industry representatives, and policymakers.

The event, titled “Batteries: Innovation, Safety and Sustainability,” will be among the first public initiatives of ELISA — the newly launched Energy Laboratory for Interdisciplinary Storage Applications. The lab was created to advance research and technology transfer in the field of energy storage systems, a sector seen as central to Europe’s decarbonization goals.

The program will open with remarks by Erik Vesselli, the university’s delegate for technology transfer and research relations, and Alessandro Massi Pavan, delegate for sustainability and energy transition and coordinator of the Giacomo Ciamician Interdepartmental Center.

Speakers will address topics ranging from future battery demand and pricing, presented by economist Romeo Danielis of the University of Trieste, to industrial innovation, with FAAM’s Carmen Cavallo discussing the Italian company’s trajectory. Other sessions will highlight long-duration storage, fire safety issues, lithium battery recycling, and the potential of new chemistries such as flow and molten salt batteries.

Scientific perspectives will also be at the forefront. Researchers from Elettra Sincrotrone Trieste will outline synchrotron-based techniques for battery studies, while faculty members from Trieste will present ELISA’s initial research priorities, including advanced characterization and energy management systems.

Two closing talks will emphasize cutting-edge approaches: machine learning methods for predicting battery performance, by Emanuele Ogliari of the Polytechnic University of Milan, and new techniques for assessing battery health beyond laboratory tests, presented by Simona Onori of Stanford University.

The conference will take place in the Aula Magna of Building D on the university’s Piazzale Europa campus. Admission is free, though advance registration is required.
