In an effort to address rising concerns over urban decay and crime, the Trieste Police Department has intensified its patrols across the city, targeting both central neighborhoods and suburban districts. These operations, aimed at preventing drug use, alcohol abuse, and vandalism, reflect a broader push to ensure safety and restore public trust in some of the city’s most vulnerable areas.

On the evening of November 29, police teams fanned out across hotspots such as Largo Barriera, Piazza Garibaldi, Piazza del Perugino, Campo San Giacomo, Borgo San Sergio, and Via Valmaura. Officers conducted thorough inspections of public spaces and closely monitored activity in areas flagged for signs of neglect and criminal behavior.

Beyond the city center, the operation extended to the Karst Plateau, including the villages of Prosecco and Padriciano. These rural communities have recently reported a spate of residential burglaries. To bolster the effort, authorities enlisted the help of the elite Crime Prevention Unit, a specialized team trained to patrol high-risk zones and deter criminal activity.

The November 29 operation was not an isolated initiative. A similar sweep was conducted on November 23, marking the beginning of what officials describe as “systematic efforts” to reclaim areas with high crime rates.

During the past two operations, police identified approximately 230 individuals, including 63 foreign nationals. In addition, officers inspected nearly 100 vehicles and reviewed compliance at 27 businesses, assessing both administrative records and patron activity.

These stepped-up patrols are set to continue on a weekly basis, according to a statement from the Trieste Police Headquarters. Officials expressed a commitment to combating crime while building stronger connections with the community.

“The safety of our citizens is paramount,” the statement read. “We will remain vigilant and proactive in addressing all forms of illegal activity, ensuring that Trieste remains a secure and welcoming place for everyone.”

Residents have reacted with a mix of relief and skepticism. While many applaud the increased police presence, others worry about potential overreach and whether the efforts will address deeper socio-economic challenges.
