A new initiative launched this week aims to make grocery shopping easier for elderly and vulnerable individuals in Trieste. The project, La Spesa Gentile (“Gentle Shopping”), is a collaboration between the de Banfield Association and Coop Alleanza 3.0, Italy’s largest retail cooperative. Volunteers trained by the de Banfield Association will assist customers who may struggle with tasks like finding products or reading labels in select Coop supermarkets.

Unveiled on Grandparents’ Day, October 2, the initiative builds on previous efforts to support individuals with cognitive decline, such as dementia, as part of a growing movement to create a Dementia-Friendly Community in Trieste.

“Shopping is a crucial social activity for many elderly individuals, and when it becomes difficult, their independence is at risk,” said Massimo Simeon, President of de Banfield. “This initiative aims to extend that independence with small, meaningful assistance.”

Volunteers will be available in Coop stores at designated times, with the public invited to contribute their time by signing up online.

“We believe no one should be left behind,” said Nico Costa, a Coop Alleanza 3.0 board member.
