In a melding of adventure and scientific inquiry, the Scientific Museums of Trieste present “Learning while walking – the outdoor conferences,” a series aimed at unraveling the secrets of nature. On Saturday, May 11th, the focus turns to the enigmatic Blue Cave of Samatorza, nestled within the picturesque landscape of Duino Aurisina, Trieste.

Guiding this expedition is Sergio Dolce, a seasoned explorer and former director of the Civic Museum of Natural History of Trieste. Dolce, a member of the esteemed Triestine Alpine Club, brings with him a wealth of experience and a passion for uncovering the hidden truths of our world.

The Blue Cave of Samatorza stands as a testament to the wonders of the natural world, its karst environment shrouded in mystery and intrigue. As participants embark on this journey, they will witness firsthand the delicate interplay between climate and landscape. Armed with thermohygrometers, they will measure temperature and humidity variations, both within the cavernous depths and amidst the rugged terrain outside.

But this expedition is more than just a scientific endeavor; it is a voyage into history and prehistory, as well as a glimpse into the delicate balance of our planet’s climate. The Blue Cave, with its archaeological significance and faunistic wonders, serves as a window into the past, offering insights into our collective environmental heritage.

At the heart of this journey lies a deeper understanding of our world’s climate and the role that caves play in its ever-evolving narrative. Through a captivating screening at the cave’s depths, participants will confront the stark realities of climate change, as well as the potential solutions that lie within our grasp.

For those eager to join this expedition, participation is free, but registration is required. Sturdy footwear and a sense of adventure are essential, as participants navigate rocky trails and muddy paths. The meeting point, along SP6, offers easy access for both bus travelers and those arriving by car.

As the sun sets on the horizon and the shadows of the Blue Cave grow long, participants will depart with a newfound appreciation for the wonders of nature and a renewed sense of urgency in the face of climate change. In the words of Sergio Dolce, “In the depths of the earth, we find the answers to the mysteries of our world.”
