Friuli Venezia Giulia’s Università Degli Studi Di Trieste is the top university in the region and among the top universities in Italy according to the 2023 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ARWU) of Shanghai Ranking Consultancy, a prestigious independent research organization on higher education.

Once again this year the Trieste’s University is positioned in the 601-700 range of the global ranking, while at the same time it is improving in the Italian one, where it is now in 25th place ex aequo with the Polytechnics of the Marche and Turin and the universities of Brescia , Ferrara, Siena and Campani “Luigi Vanvitelli”.

“The results obtained in the Arwu ranking – comments the rector Roberto Di Lenarda – are certainly very valid, especially if commensurate with our size and our budget. Not only is the international consideration of the University of Trieste confirmed, but also its role of reference in the regional context and of absolute importance in the Triveneto”.

Rome’s La Sapienza remains number one university in Italy and ranks among the top 150 universities in the world (the only Italian university to get this status).

Launched in 2003, ARWU ranks 2,500 universities – out of a global total of around 18,000 – publishing the top 1,000.

World universities are ranked using criteria such as the number of alumni and staff winning Nobel Prizes and Fields Medals, the number of highly-cited researchers, and per capita academic performance.

The world’s top three universities in 2019 according to ARWU are Harvard, Stanford and Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT).
