Trieste will restrict the possession and consumption of alcohol and drinks in glass containers in parts of the city during this year’s Barcolana sailing regatta, as authorities prepare for large crowds attending the event.

Mayor Roberto Dipiazza signed an emergency ordinance imposing the restrictions from 10 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 7, through midnight Sunday, Oct. 11, 2026.

The rules will apply nightly from 10 p.m. to 5 a.m. within a broad central area stretching from the waterfront and its piers into parts of the historic center and surrounding neighborhoods.

Under the ordinance, people will be prohibited from possessing or consuming beverages in glass bottles or other glass containers in public areas or privately owned spaces open to the public. Alcoholic drinks containing more than 12 percent alcohol by volume will also be prohibited, regardless of the type of container.

The city said the measures are intended to prevent public disorder and protect cleanliness, safety and the quality of life during one of Trieste’s busiest annual events.

Restaurants and bars will be allowed to serve drinks to customers using authorized outdoor seating areas, including tables and chairs, provided they comply with existing rules governing opening hours and public-space use.

Home deliveries will also be permitted during transportation.

Violations can result in administrative fines ranging from €250 to €1,500, unless the conduct constitutes a criminal offense.

The Barcolana, now in its 58th edition, is expected to bring large numbers of sailors, residents and visitors to Trieste for several days of races and related events.
