Barcolana fever is in full swing in Trieste as the city enters the final week before the 58th edition’s main race on Sunday. The event officially opened Friday with a traditional flag-raising ceremony at the Società Velica di Barcola e Grignano, marking the start of 10 days of sailing and cultural events across Friuli Venezia Giulia.

More than 1,300 boats had registered for Sunday’s race by Friday, while hundreds of young sailors, athletes and visitors have already taken part in events across the city and region.

With the waterfront increasingly crowded, Trieste is settling into one of its busiest weeks of the year.
