Firefighters continued battling a wildfire on the Karst plateau outside Trieste on Monday after a hotspot reignited overnight near Padriciano, just a few hundred meters from homes and the Ieralla nursing home.
The blaze, which began Saturday afternoon between Padriciano and Gropada, sent thick smoke across Trieste throughout the weekend. Emergency crews, supported by regional Civil Protection teams, forestry personnel, helicopters and the Italian Army, contained the renewed flare-up before it reached nearby buildings.
The Ieralla nursing home, which houses 112 elderly residents, has an evacuation plan in place should conditions worsen, although no evacuation has been required.
The fire remains contained but has not yet been fully extinguished, with firefighters continuing to monitor and suppress remaining hotspots.
