The Friuli Venezia Giulia regional government will allocate €1 million through an emergency Civil Protection decree to stabilize a section of Via Giulia in Trieste after a historic stone retaining wall collapsed during last weekend’s violent storms.
Regional Councilor for Civil Protection Riccardo Riccardi inspected the site on Wednesday at the intersection with Via dello Scoglio, where the wall gave way after intense rainfall created abnormal water pressure in a secondary branch of the underground sewer system. The collapse sent rubble across the sidewalk and part of the roadway, damaging several parked vehicles and forcing authorities to secure the area.
The emergency funding will enable the Municipality of Trieste to immediately begin stabilizing the site, removing debris and launching the design of a permanent replacement structure, allowing reconstruction efforts to proceed without delay.
Speaking during the inspection, Riccardi said the incident underscored the growing challenges posed by increasingly intense and localized weather events. He noted that while the region has invested hundreds of millions of euros in strengthening infrastructure and improving resilience in recent years, extreme weather continues to expose vulnerable areas and requires rapid intervention when emergencies occur.
The councilor added that the regional administration remains committed to providing swift financial support through Civil Protection whenever extraordinary events threaten public safety or critical infrastructure, emphasizing that adapting to more frequent severe weather will remain a priority for the region.
