Trieste has received two national honors at the 2026 Urbanistica Awards, organized by Italy’s Urbanistica magazine and the National Institute of Urban Planning (INU), recognizing the city’s work in urban regeneration and planning.

The awards were announced during a press conference attended by Territorial Policies Councillor Michele Babuder, Planning Service Director Eddi Dalla Betta and Sandro Fabbro, president of the INU’s Friuli Venezia Giulia chapter.

Trieste was recognized in the Plans and Programs category for its RUPA Observatory on Urban Regeneration and Housing Policies, a planning initiative designed to monitor urban development and support future housing policies. The city also won in the Projects and Construction Sites category for Scintille: San Giacomo, a neighborhood regeneration project that combines public space improvements with social and cultural initiatives.

The official awards ceremony will take place during the Urbanpromo conference in Florence from Nov. 10 to 13.

City officials said the awards acknowledge years of planning work aimed at guiding Trieste’s long-term development. Upcoming steps include the publication of a new RUPA report this September and the launch of design tenders for several redevelopment projects in the San Giacomo district, including the renovation of public gardens and a civic center.
