The city of Trieste is once again opening its air-conditioned public libraries to residents and visitors seeking relief from summer heat, as increasingly frequent heat waves continue to affect the region.
Municipal officials said the initiative is intended to provide cool, accessible indoor spaces where people can escape high temperatures during library opening hours. The program is part of the city’s broader public service efforts to reduce the health risks associated with extreme heat.
The participating libraries and their opening hours are:
- Attilio Hortis Civic Library (Via Madonna del Mare 13): Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. and 2 p.m.–6:30 p.m.
- Pier Antonio Quarantotti Gambini Library (Via delle Lodole 6): Monday through Friday, 9 a.m.–1 p.m. and 3 p.m.–6:30 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m.–1 p.m.
- Stelio Mattioni Library (Via Petracco 10): Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 3 p.m.–7 p.m.; Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays, 9 a.m.–1 p.m.
- Lina Marii Marinelli Library (Via Louis Pasteur 44): Tuesday through Saturday, 10 a.m.–1 p.m. and 2:30 p.m.–6:30 p.m.
- Newspaper and Periodicals Library (Emeroteca) (Piazza Hortis 4): Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m.–8 p.m.; Sunday, 10 a.m.–7 p.m.
The initiative comes as Italian cities continue to adapt public services to address the growing impact of prolonged periods of extreme summer temperatures.
