Friuli Venezia Giulia has launched a new program to continuously monitor electromagnetic fields generated by mobile phone base stations as the region’s telecommunications network, including 5G infrastructure, continues to expand.
The initiative, presented Tuesday in Trieste by the regional environmental agency Arpa FVG, adds fixed monitoring stations to the agency’s existing system of spot measurements. The first station has been installed at the Cobolli Recreation Center in Trieste and will collect data over periods of at least two weeks.
Regional officials said the project is intended to provide a more detailed picture of electromagnetic field levels and increase public access to information. Data from the monitoring campaign will be published through the region’s Open Data portal and displayed on an interactive map managed by Arpa FVG.
According to the agency, approximately 2,400 measurements were conducted across the region in 2025, with none exceeding Italy’s legal exposure limits. Officials noted that the country’s standards remain among the strictest in Europe.
The monitoring effort comes as mobile infrastructure continues to grow. At the end of 2025, Friuli Venezia Giulia counted 2,866 mobile telecommunications installations, about 45 percent of which were equipped with 5G technology.
Regional authorities said the campaign will focus particularly on locations considered sensitive, including areas frequented by children and near health-care facilities.
