This summer, Trieste is turning itself into an open-air stage. From June 4 through August 31, the Adriatic city will host more than 300 cultural events as part of Trieste Estate 2026, the annual summer festival organized by the Comune di Trieste. With concerts spilling into grand piazzas, theater performances animating neighborhood streets and jazz echoing through centuries-old fortresses, the city is betting big on culture as both spectacle and invitation.

Backed by a €1.1 million investment — including €420,000 from the tourist accommodation tax — this year’s edition embraces the idea of “the city as stage,” transforming locations across Trieste into performance venues. Events will unfold everywhere from the hilltop Castello di San Giusto to the waterfront and the city’s outer districts.

“This is a festival designed to belong to the entire city,” said Giorgio Rossi, Trieste’s Councillor for Culture and Tourism, presenting the program alongside Francesca Locci, head of the municipal tourism and cultural events office, and artistic directors Gabriele Centis and Lino Marrazzo.

One of the festival’s most anticipated moments will arrive on July 25, when Gorillaz takes over Piazza Unità for a sold-out concert that has already drawn an international audience. Organizers say more than 60 percent of ticket holders are traveling from outside the Friuli Venezia Giulia region, with visitors expected from over 50 countries.

The city hopes such marquee events will translate into long-term tourism. A study conducted by the University of Udineon comparable 2024 concerts found that more than one in five attendees visited a destination for the first time specifically because of a live event.

Elsewhere, the festival will lean into Trieste’s more intimate side. The Fuoricentro (“Out of Center”) program, curated by Hangar Teatri, will bring free performances to 15 neighborhoods including Roiano, San Giacomo, Opicina and Barcola, spreading the festival beyond the historic core.

And for jazz lovers, the 20th edition of Trieste Loves Jazz promises one of the summer’s most atmospheric evenings: a sunset concert at the Bastione Rotondo on August 12, timed to coincide with a solar eclipse.

The complete lineup is available at Trieste Estate.
