While Americans and the English are marking St. Patrick’s Day with parades and green attire, Italy and in particular downtown Trieste shows a quieter scene. We wandered the city streets to see if locals were joining the festivities. At a popular downtown bar behind Piazza Unità, an Irish expat celebrated with a Guinness, while the bar offered a playful promotion: three t-shirts for every three beers. Most residents had heard of the holiday but didn’t participate. Across the Atlantic, cities go all out with parades, music, and costumes. Perhaps one day, St. Patrick’s Day will catch on in Trieste too.
