A new emergency medicine ward has been activated on the 12th floor of the medical tower at Cattinara Hospital in Trieste. The ward is part of the emergency and urgent care services of Azienda Sanitaria Universitaria Giuliano Isontina (ASUGI), the public health authority responsible for the hospital.

The new unit forms part of the hospital’s emergency care system and is intended to strengthen the management of patients with acute medical conditions arriving through the emergency department. Cattinara Hospital serves as the main healthcare hub for the Trieste area and operates within the regional health system of Friuli Venezia Giulia.

According to ASUGI, emergency medicine services at Cattinara treat patients with serious acute conditions requiring urgent diagnosis, monitoring, and short-term hospitalization. These cases include severe infections, respiratory failure, intoxication, and cardiovascular complications that may require stabilization before transfer to other hospital wards or discharge.

The emergency medicine unit works in close coordination with the hospital’s emergency department and other clinical units. The service also participates in regional emergency care networks and in the clinical training of medical and nursing students, ASUGI noted.

The new ward in the medical tower expands the space available for emergency medicine patients within the hospital’s existing emergency care network.

Hospital data indicate that the emergency medicine unit admits approximately 2,000 to 2,500 patients annually for urgent conditions requiring monitored observation or sub-intensive treatment.
