A motion to suspend the city’s planned cable car project, introduced by councilor Francesco Russo and backed by all opposition group leaders, was defeated on Monday. The vote ended with 13 in favor, representing the opposition, and 19 against, supporting the council majority.
During the debate, Altin of Lista Russo criticized the delay in addressing urgent motions, noting that the proposal was being discussed 500 days after its initial submission. Opposition members reiterated their concerns about the project, citing environmental and planning issues.
The center-right majority, aligned with Mayor Roberto Dipiazza, supported moving forward with the cable car, although Forza Italia abstained, calling for internal reflection within the ruling coalition. Mayor Dipiazza emphasized that a final decision would depend on pending judicial rulings, including a judgment from the Administrative Court of Lazio on ministerial funding and appeals before the Council of State related to the annulment of environmental assessments. Funding for the project remains a key issue.
Next Monday, councilor Bertoli of the Lega party is expected to present a 40-million-euro budget amendment, which could trigger further debate. Opposition members may propose changes to remove the cable car from the city’s list of planned works, signaling another vote in the near future.
Before the motion was discussed, the council held commemorations, including a tribute by Mayor Dipiazza to Luigi Russo, a prominent figure in Trieste’s political and administrative landscape and the father of councilor Francesco Russo. Luigi Russo had served as the leader of the city council’s Popular Party group.
