The Comune of Trieste has announced extensive traffic and public transport measures for Saturday, February 14, 2026, to accommodate the 57th edition of the Kraški Pust – Carnevale Carsico di Opicina, one of the Karst Plateau’s most established cultural events.

The annual carnival, which features a parade of allegorical floats and masked groups, will take place in the center of Opicina. In the event of severe weather, the celebration will be postponed to Saturday, February 21. The measures are outlined in Municipal Ordinance No. 045-26.

Parking and Traffic Closures

A temporary ban on parking and stopping, with enforced removal, will be in effect from midnight until 8:00 p.m., and in any case until the end of the event and subsequent street-cleaning operations. The restrictions will apply to several key roads in Opicina, including Strada per Vienna, Via di Prosecco, Via del Ricreatorio, Via Nazionale, Via di Basovizza, and adjacent intersections, as well as the entire roundabout connecting the main thoroughfares of the area.

In addition, a ban on vehicular traffic will be enforced from 12:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., or until the conclusion of the parade and cleanup activities. Road closures will affect major segments of Via di Prosecco, Via del Ricreatorio, Via Nazionale, and Strada per Vienna, particularly along the route used by the carnival procession.

Changes to Taxis and Public Transport

The taxi stand currently located on Via Nazionale will be temporarily relocated for the entire day to a new position further along the same road, near Piazza Monte Re. Parking and stopping will be prohibited in the provisional taxi area except for authorized vehicles.

Public transport services will also be adjusted. Bus routes that intersect with the parade route will see temporary relocations of stops and termini. These will be identified on-site by Trieste Trasporti personnel, primarily along State Road TS 35 near the Opicina junction, close to the local service station.

Derogations and Enforcement

Exemptions to the restrictions will apply to emergency vehicles, law enforcement, parade floats, and public utility vehicles involved in post-event cleaning operations. Local public transport vehicles operated by Trieste Trasporti will also be permitted to circulate and stop in designated areas as required.

Vehicles found in violation of the temporary regulations will be removed by authorities. The municipality has noted that additional changes or safety-related measures may be introduced on the day of the event by police or local law enforcement officials, depending on operational needs.

Residents and visitors are advised to plan ahead, use public transportation where possible, and allow additional travel time during the carnival hours.
