The city of Trieste will carry out a series of technological upgrades to its traffic light system between Monday, January 26, and Friday, January 30, 2026, a project that will temporarily affect traffic flow across several major intersections.

According to city officials, the work is part of a public-private partnership agreement signed with Edison Next and involves the replacement of all existing traffic signal controllers with next-generation systems. In total, 69 traffic light controllers across the city will be upgraded.

During the installation process, the city will be unable to maintain the so-called “green wave” — the coordinated sequence of green lights designed to ease traffic along major corridors — on the roads affected by the works. Officials said the system will be restored as soon as the upgrades are completed.

To minimize disruption, the local police will be stationed at key intersections to manage traffic and ensure road safety while the signals are temporarily switched off.

The work will take place during daytime hours and will affect different locations each day, as outlined below:

  • Monday, January 26 (9:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.): Via Alberti, Via San Marco, Viale Campi Elisi, Via D’Alviano
  • Tuesday, January 27 (9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.): Viale d’Annunzio and Largo Mioni
(2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.): Via Rossetti, Viale XX Settembre, Via Gatteri
  • Wednesday, January 28 (9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.): Piazza Sansovino, Via Bernini, Via del Bosco
(2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.): Via Ginnastica, Via Gatteri, Via Brunner
  • Thursday, January 29 (9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.): Via Ginnastica and Via Timeus
(2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.): Via Pascoli, Largo Niccolini, Via Conti
  • Friday, January 30 (9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.): Via Coroneo, Largo Piave, Via Zanetti

City officials urged motorists to allow extra travel time and to follow instructions from traffic officers during the affected periods.
