A winter storm is forecast to hit Trieste and northeastern Italy early this week, bringing freezing temperatures, strong Bora winds and the season’s first significant chance of snowfall at sea level.
According to the regional weather service Osmer, light snow could begin as early as Monday, with cloudy skies and moderate to strong Bora winds along the coast. Conditions may intensify on Tuesday, the Epiphany holiday, when snowfall remains possible and wind gusts in Trieste could reach up to 100 kilometers per hour.
The city has activated its winter emergency plan, which includes preventive salting of roads and the deployment of snowplows if accumulation reaches about five centimeters. Priority will be given to hospital routes, public transportation corridors and main traffic arteries.
Residents are being advised to limit travel, use winter tires or chains if driving is necessary, and avoid motorcycles and bicycles. City officials will provide updates through official online channels as conditions develop.
