As the Christmas season approaches, the Diocese of Trieste has announced a series of liturgical celebrations that will carry the city from Christmas Eve through the close of the civil year and into the World Day of Peace. All major celebrations will be presided over by Bishop Enrico Trevisi, centering on the Cathedral of San Giusto and several of the city’s most significant churches.
The celebrations begin on Wednesday, December 24, with the Solemnity of the Nativity of the Lord. At 11:30 p.m., Bishop Trevisi will preside at the Cathedral over the Office of Readings, followed by the traditional Midnight Mass marking the birth of Christ.
On Christmas Day, Thursday, December 25, the bishop will return to the Cathedral at 10 a.m. for the Mass of Christmas Day. Later in the afternoon, at 4:30 p.m., he will lead Vespers for the Solemnity at the Monastery of San Cipriano in Prosecco, extending the celebration beyond the city center.
The liturgical calendar will also mark the conclusion of the Jubilee Year in the Diocese on Sunday, December 28. A Mass will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. in the Cathedral of San Giusto, formally closing the Jubilee at the diocesan level. In the afternoon, at 4:30 p.m., Bishop Trevisi will preside over Vespers and Eucharistic Adoration at the Church of Sant’Antonio Taumaturgo.
As the year draws to a close, the Diocese will observe the end of the civil year on Wednesday, December 31, with a Mass at 6:30 p.m. at the Parish Church of the Beata Vergine del Soccorso, commonly known as Sant’Antonio Vecchio. The celebration will conclude with the singing of the traditional Te Deum, a hymn of thanksgiving offered at the close of the year.
The liturgical cycle will continue on January 1, with the Solemnity of Mary, Mother of God, which also coincides with the World Day of Peace. At 6 p.m., Bishop Trevisi will preside over Mass at the Church of Sant’Antonio Taumaturgo. Following the celebration, the bishop and the president of Catholic Action will formally deliver to local authorities the message of Pope Leo XIV for the 59th World Day of Peace, titled “Peace be with you all: toward a ‘disarmed and disarming’ peace.”
