Wineries across Friuli Venezia Giulia are welcoming visitors on November 8 and 9 for the annual Open Cellars for San Martino weekend, an event held in anticipation of the November 11 feast of San Martino. The celebration, rooted in agricultural tradition, marks the close of the farming year and the arrival of new wine.
The initiative offered guests the opportunity to explore vineyards and cellars during one of the most symbolic periods on the regional calendar. Guided tastings, cellar visits, and food pairings reflected both the wine making heritage of the area and the seasonal shift in the countryside.
Among the participating estates were Stella Winery, Villa Russiz, and Borgo Conventi, where producers spoke about the significance of San Martino — a moment to honor the harvest, share new vintages, and welcome the community into the heart of their cellars.
While the feast of San Martino is formally celebrated on November 11, the early weekend openings allowed visitors to experience the region’s wine making culture at the height of autumn. As vineyards take on their late-season hues, the tradition continues to underscore the connection between land, labor, and the passing of the agricultural year in Italy’s northeastern wine country.
