A mechanical failure on one of the three historic Opicina trams has temporarily reduced service on one of the city’s most distinctive transport lines.

On Saturday morning, September 27, tram car No. 406, which had departed from Piazza Dalmazia, experienced a breakdown in its power converter and was forced out of service. The vehicle was moved to the Opicina depot, where repairs began immediately with assistance from outside specialists.

According to Trieste Trasporti, the local transit company, the repairs are expected to take several days due to the complexity of the intervention and delays in sourcing replacement parts. Until the work is completed, both the Line 2 tram service and the Trieste Tram Tour will operate with two cars instead of the usual three. The reduction means 39 daily runs will be offered in place of the usual 59.

An extraordinary timetable has been introduced until tram 406 returns to service. The company also announced that, on an exceptional basis and subject to existing reservations, passengers may use regular urban transit tickets and passes to ride the Trieste Tram Tour. However, access to the tourist tour’s dedicated services will not be available.

The company has not yet provided an exact date for the return of the third tram, but said it will announce updates as soon as they become available.
