More than 600 candidates sat for entrance exams this Monday at the University of Trieste for undergraduate programs in the health professions, vying for a limited number of places.

The test, which consisted of 60 multiple-choice questions to be completed in 100 minutes, drew 606 applicants across three campuses. They are competing for 460 spots, including 200 in nursing, the largest allocation.

This year, 660 people applied, a figure slightly below 2024 levels but higher than in 2022. Among the candidates were not only recent high school graduates but also working adults seeking career changes.

The competition comes amid adjustments to Italy’s medical school admissions process, which now allows some students who do not qualify after the so-called “filter semester” to transfer into health professions. Up to 40 places are reserved in nursing, eight in public health assistance, and four in prevention techniques.
