Trieste will be among the host cities in September for La Corsa del Ricordo—the “Race of Remembrance”—an annual sporting event that commemorates the massacres of the foibe and the forced exodus of Italian communities from the country’s northeastern borderlands in the aftermath of World War II.

The initiative, organized by the Italian Sports and Social Associations (ASI) with the support of the National Association of Venezia Giulia and Dalmatia (ANVGD), has already made stops this year in Rome, Catania, Grosseto and Aversa. In September, the race will expand to three more cities across the country: San Felice Circeo in Lazio, Novara in Piedmont, and Trieste, which will host the eighth edition of the event locally.

The Trieste race is scheduled for Sunday, September 21, and will once again take place around the Foiba of Basovizza, a memorial site tied to the postwar violence. The course will stretch 9.9 kilometers across a mixed terrain of asphalt and dirt paths. A shorter, non-competitive “Family Run” of four kilometers will also be offered, designed to welcome broader community participation. Registration for the competitive event is capped at 500 runners.

Locally, the event is organized by the “Trieste Corre” committee alongside the Friuli Venezia Giulia branch of ASI, ANVGD, and the Lega Nazionale. This year’s edition will be dedicated to Nino Benvenuti, the Olympic boxing champion originally from Istria, who passed away earlier this year. Organizers say the tribute reflects Benvenuti’s enduring reputation as both a sporting icon and a symbol of resilience and integrity.

A program of events leading up to race day will include a commemorative gathering on Monday, September 15, at the Friuli Venezia Giulia Regional headquarters, featuring local officials, sports leaders, and representatives of associations connected to the history of Venezia Giulia and Dalmatia. The event will retrace Benvenuti’s celebrated career and his role in Italian sporting culture.

Participants can register online until midnight on Thursday, September 18, through the official race portal. The entry fee of €10 includes a bib number, medical assistance, logistical support for the course, refreshments at the finish line, and a race package featuring a commemorative T-shirt and additional items.
