The 19th annual TriesteLovesJazz festival, which runs from July 4 to September 5, is continuing this week with a free performance combining music and art, followed by its traditional sunrise concert.

On Thursday, August 7, at 9 p.m. in the garden of the Winckelmann Museum, the festival will present “Il Respiro dell’arte” (The Breath of Art). This multimedia project is an homage to four 20th-century artists: Piet MondrianWassily KandinskyHenri Matisse, and Frida Kahlo. The show features musicians Maurizio Camardi (saxophones, duduk, electronics) and Francesco Ganassin (clarinets, ocarina, electronics), with multi-vision projections by Francesco Lopergolo. The performance marks the only event at this location for the festival’s current edition.

The project was created to commemorate the 2024 anniversaries of the artists’ deaths, with the visual component drawing inspiration from their works. The musical duo, Camardi and Ganassin, have a history of blending jazz with world music and collaborating with other art forms. They are also known for their previous work, an album titled “Il respiro di Giotto,” which was inspired by the frescoes of the Scrovegni Chapel in Padua. This earlier recording, featuring writer Massimo Carlotto, was praised for its unique sound and coherence.

Sunrise Concert to Close Festival

The festival will conclude with its customary sunrise concert on Sunday, August 10. The free event, which often draws a large crowd, is scheduled for 4:50 a.m. at Molo Audace.

This year’s closing performance will feature pianist and composer Emanuele Filippi. A native of the Friuli region now based in New York, Filippi has been described by trumpeter Enrico Rava as “one of the best pianists of his generation.” American pianist Fred Hersch has called his music “powerful and profound.”

Filippi, who has released four albums as a leader, has a musical style that blends tradition and innovation. He has collaborated with numerous notable musicians, including Enrico RavaFabrizio Bosso, and Seamus Blake. Filippi has performed at venues around the world, from the Blue Note in Milan to the Rockwood Music Hall in New York. A graduate of both the Udine Conservatory and the City College of New York, he is also the founder of the Udin&Jazz Big Band. His most recent album, “Carousel,” was released in 2024.
